In the Wellington workshop:
Imogen Foote presented an activity where students would be able to:
- track a DNA marker to identify a threatened seabird specimen captured as incidental bycatch in NZ fisheries.
- discuss the implications of fisheries bycatch on seabird species and how genetic and genomic methods can be applied to seabird conservation.
Dr Helen Woolner presented her experiences in order for teachers to:
- appreciate the academic journey and career of a Pasifika student and researcher.
- learn how to make genetics and genomics more relevant and engaging topics for Pasifika students.
Carla Finn presented two activities to provide opportunities for students to:
- understand phylogenetic inference to construct a phylogenetic tree.
- explore how genetic variation helps us trace evolutionary paths and relationships across ratites.
